2014 Friends Weekend

 ‘REMEMBERING WORLD WAR I’

On the 3rd August 2014 we held a special service of thanksgiving for the service and sacrifice of those of the parish and beyond and those who came to work in its munitions factory.

This moving service was led by the Right Rev. John Richardson. Fiona Armstrong read an extract of the speech which Sir Edward Grey delivered to The House of Commons on the eve of the World War I.

Members of Longtown Young Farmers Club read from the roll of honour, the names of those who served from The Parish.

Gordon Kydd (Trumpet) played the Last Post and The Reveille.

The service concluded with members of the congregation placing wild flowers from the fields of the parish to form a cross in the centre of the church as an act of thanksgiving.

Following the service the church was open for several days with an exhibition of photographs and material describing the activities in the parish during the war. Including the Mossband and Smalmstown  sites of the HM Munitions Factory Gretna and the convalescent home for shell shocked soldiers at Glingerbank.
