THE GRAVEYARD
18th Century Gravestones in the Churchyard.
Symbols of mortality are carved on the reverse of some gravestones. The winged face derives from the Egyptian hieroglyph for the Sun God Ra. Other gravestones have armorial bearings which local families fashioned themselves to demonstrate their increasing prosperity. The reverse was used to maximise the space available on the front to record family members who had died outside the parish or overseas.
A location plan together with a full survey of all the inscriptions on the gravestones is in a folder at the rear of the Church. Unfortunately, we are unable to publish the full list on-
