Sir Robert Graham - Home Secretary

Dr Robert Graham. A great agricultural reformer. Dr Robert carried out many improvements to the Netherby Estate by way of drainage and crop management. So successful was he that most of his tenants sold their grain to him and it was ‘exported from a port at Gretna. He also built an infamous Fish trap at the Coop House, about 500 yards downstream from the Church. This coop  prevented fish from ascending the river and there was a near international incident when the Scots came down to the coop armed for battle. Major confrontation was only averted when the good doctor agreed to open up a sluice to allow the passage of some of the fish up-river, aided too by the presence of the militia from Carlisle Castle.

David Lockhart Botanist. Trained at Kew Gardens, Lockhart travelled to Trinidad and became Curator of the Botanical Gardens there. He imported many species of Orchid and had a species named afgter hjim ******** lockhartiii

James Westoll The first and only man to have painted every bird in the world. He published a book shortly before his death - An illustraed Checklist of the birds of the World’ . A copy is available to view in the Church.
