Sir Robert Graham -
Viscount Preston
Dr Robert Graham. A great agricultural reformer. Dr Robert carried out many improvements to the Netherby Estate by way of drainage and crop management. So successful was he that most of his tenants sold their grain to him and it was ‘exported from a port at Gretna. He also built an infamous Fish trap at the Coop House, about 500 yards downstream from the Church. This coop prevented fish from ascending the river and there was a near international incident when the Scots came down to the coop armed for battle. Major confrontation was only averted when the good doctor agreed to open up a sluice to allow the passage of some of the fish up-
