Friends of Kirkandrews-on-Esk Church

 The Exterior

The Bell Tower – The Bell weighing 4 1/2cwts and costing nearly £50 was installed in 1830 suspended  from a frame made by a Longtown Joiner.  The Sundial is a Thanksgiving by Sir Richard and Lady Cynthia Graham for the safe return of their two sons from World War I.  The weather vane bearing the initials RG 1635 ( Sir Richard Graham of Netherby who re-founded the Church in 1635) and FG 1951 ( Sir Fergus Graham of Netherby) was added  to mark the Festival of Britain.

The Inscription, engraved in the sandstone surrounding the sundial reads:

“THANKS BE TO GOD ALONE FOR OUR TWO DEAR SONS FEC AND PC WHO LIVED TO COME HOME FROM THE GREAT WAR”

And engraved in the Sun dial itself:

1918

 LUX POST UMBRA

Which translated from Latin means ‘Light after shadow’
